About

The University of Oxford has a thriving startup and venture capital ecosystem, serving as a hub of innovation and a springboard for numerous high-potential ventures. This rich ecosystem has spawned numerous well-known success stories.

One example is the fintech startup, Onfido, cofounded by three Oxford University Alumni: Husayn Kassai, Eamon Jubbawy, and Ruhul Aminin. It uses artificial intelligence to help businesses verify people's identities online. Since its establishment in 2012, Onfido has raised more than $200 million in venture funding from investors including TPG Growth and Salesforce Ventures.

Another notable story is that of NaturalMotion, the gaming company founded by Oxford alum Torsten Reil. It developed the groundbreaking game, Clumsy Ninja and was later sold to Zynga for over $500 million in 2014. This remains one of the largest exits in Oxford's entrepreneurial history.

These ventures have benefitted from a range of resources available within the University. Initiatives such as the Oxford Foundry, a university-wide entrepreneurship center, and the Oxford University Innovation (OUI), the technology transfer company of the University, provide support to budding entrepreneurs and startups. Oxford Foundry provides a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs to engage, learn and launch startups, while the OUI helps commercialize academic research and expertise.

Moreover, the Said Business School’s Entrepreneurship Centre offers programmes, events and activities that provide practical guidance on entrepreneurship, supplemented by a deep academic learning framework. This initiative has incubated successful startups like DiffBlue and Vaccitech.

The University of Oxford also attracts significant venture capital. The Oxford Sciences Innovation (OSI), for example, is a £600 million venture fund dedicated to the science and technology spinouts of Oxford University. It is the largest university venture fund of its kind globally.

The combination of prestigious academia, a robust network of entrepreneurs, vast financial resources and supportive university initiatives makes University of Oxford a key player in the UK's startup and VC ecosystem.
