Northeastern University, known for its cooperative education program that allows students to gain real world work experience during their studies, has built a dynamic startup and venture capitalist (VC) ecosystem. This vibrant environment fosters entrepreneurship and innovation amongst its students and alumni.
The university's Center for Entrepreneurship Education, the hub of this ecosystem, runs several initiatives. It includes IDEA, a student-led venture accelerator that provides gap funding, coaching, and in-kind services to ventures at any stage, from concept to launch. Since its launch in 2009, IDEA has spurred the creation of over 76 companies, raising over $155 million in external capital.
An example of a success story from Northeastern's ecosystem is the mobile app startup, Fetch Rewards, co-founded by alum Wes Schroll. The company, which offers customers rewards for scanning their shopping receipts, has raised more than $118 million in venture funding as of May 2021.
The Michael J. and Ann Sherman Center for Engineering Entrepreneurship Education, another initiative, provides space, resources, and funding to students interested in creating their own technology-based companies. One success story from the Sherman Center is Gradient Effects, a visual effects company founded by Raffaele Scaduto-Mendola, a Northeastern alumnus. The company has been involved in the production of several major films including "Game of Thrones" and "Star Trek: Beyond".
In addition to its internal initiatives, Northeastern has also partnered with Silicon Valley's Flagship Labs and other organizations, to offer its students unprecedented access to VC insights and opportunities. Similarly, the university has a strong partnership with IDEA Venture Accelerator which has helped numerous startups in their initial stages.
Northeastern University's emphasis on experiential learning and entrepreneurship, makes it a place where startup dreams can become reality. Its robust startup and VC ecosystem continues to nurture and produce successful entrepreneurs, innovators, and startups.
