Black Opal Ventures Fellowship is a three-month immersive program designed to introduce participants to venture capital fundamentals while contributing to the investment decision-making process of a leading healthcare technology venture capital firm. Founded in 2021 by Tara Bishop, MD, MPH and Eileen Tanghal, Black Opal Ventures is a women-led venture capital firm focusing on early-stage companies using deep tech to improve healthcare.
The fellowship provides direct exposure to all aspects of venture capital operations, from sourcing and diligence to investment thesis development. Fellows participate actively in Black Opal's investment process, gaining practical experience in evaluating opportunities that combine healthcare innovation with frontier technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, quantum computing, and synthetic biology.
Black Opal's geographic presence spans New York and San Francisco, positioning fellows within two of the most active venture capital markets. The firm's focus on healthcare technology and diversity of portfolio company approaches provides fellows with exposure to multiple technological domains and entrepreneurial models within the health tech space.

Black Opal Ventures Fellowship aims to empower aspiring venture capitalists by providing them with hands-on experience in evaluating and investing in healthcare technology startups. The program focuses on leveraging deep tech innovations to address complex challenges in the healthcare sector, fostering diversity and inclusion within the venture capital landscape.
The fellowship is open for applications on a rolling basis. Interested candidates can apply through the program's website.
Fellows participate directly in Black Opal's investment operations including sourcing investment opportunities, conducting due diligence on live deals, researching market trends, and developing independent investment theses. Fellows receive mentorship and training from Black Opal's General Partners and investment team members.

The program lasts for 3 months, with rolling applications accepted throughout the year.
The fellowship requires a part-time commitment, with a minimum of 5 hours per week expected from participants.
The program operates in a hybrid model, allowing for both remote and in-person participation in New York and San Francisco.
