Overview
The Carbon to Sea Research Fellowship Program funds scientists and engineers around the world to synthesize new knowledge on ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), a marine carbon dioxide removal approach. It is run by the Carbon to Sea Initiative, which funds OAE research and responsible sector development.
Fellows take a narrowly scoped project in one of three tracks: OAE efficiency (dissolution, subduction, additionality and uncertainty), environmental impacts (lab, mesocosm and field trial evidence on marine ecosystems) and MRV (updating Carbon to Sea's interactive MRV database with cost and baseline data). They review recent literature, interview experts, survey practitioners and produce a rigorous report plus audience-specific materials, then present to the Carbon to Sea team.
The 2026 cohort, the program's second, ran part time from April 22 to July 15, 2026 (about 15 to 20 hours a week) and included expense-paid attendance at Carbon to Sea's Annual Convening in Canada on April 28 to 30, 2026. Fellows were paid USD 10,000.
Who it is for
- Background relevant to the track, for example biogeochemistry, ocean science, carbon removal, environmental science or consulting, marine robotics, data management or social science.
- Strong conceptual thinking and a strong interest in OAE.
- Willing to take on a narrowly scoped project.
- Located anywhere, but able to get a visa to travel to Canada for the Annual Convening.
