Scout Program
The Atomico Angel Programme represents Atomico's strategic effort to activate the next generation of early-stage investors across Europe. Established in 2018 by London-based venture capital firm Atomico—founded by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström—the program aims to democratize access to angel investing while simultaneously building a pre-seed deal flow network for Atomico's core Series A investing business.
The program operates on a unique model that distinguishes it from traditional scout programs. Rather than serving as a direct feeder mechanism for Atomico's own investments, the program gives angels complete autonomy in their investment decisions. Each selected angel receives $100,000 to deploy into multiple early-stage investments over a 12-month period, with the sole constraint that investments must align with Atomico's ethical principles and LP commitments. This autonomy is intentional: Atomico recognizes that angels embedded in specific communities and sectors often have superior information about emerging founders and emerging opportunities before institutional VCs.
By Year 4 (2021), the program had shifted from a fixed 12-month cohort model to a rolling admission system, where Atomico continuously adds one to two angels monthly. The Year 4 cohort welcomed eight new angels and invited 11 of the most active previous cohort members to continue with expanded investment capacity. This rolling model allows Atomico to maintain geographic and demographic diversity more dynamically.
