The DOE Energy Innovator Fellowship is a workforce-development fellowship that places recent graduates and early-career energy professionals with critical energy host organizations. Fellows work on projects that modernize the power system, improve energy infrastructure for transportation and industry, and enhance reliability, affordability, and resilience of the U.S. power system.

Admissions and application

Applicants select up to five preferred host projects. ORISE screens applications for completeness and minimum requirements, followed by preferred-host review and ORISE confirmation of a match. ORISE may conduct a 15-minute clarification interview. All appointments require DOE Program Coordinator approval; selection is not final until ORISE provides notification.

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants must have earned a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree within the last five years; be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident at application; be at least 18 by appointment start; and reside in the United States at application and throughout the appointment, including if remote. ORISE also requires demonstrated interest in grid modernization, energy infrastructure, and U.S. power-system reliability, affordability, and security.

How long is the appointment?

The initial appointment is one year. A second year is possible if all parties agree to continue.
