The startup world

Universities

Where each university ranks for startup founders and research, the organizations around it, and the ways in for students, researchers, founders and investors.

From a campus project to a company

  1. Start with what is already around you

The projects in your department, the teams in the entrepreneurship club, the spinouts leaving your lab.

  2. Find the money meant for campus work

Grants, fellowships and campus funds exist for work at this stage. Most ask for far less than a venture round does.

  3. Use the programs that recruit on campus

Fellowships, scout programs and accelerators come to campuses because that is where the early work is.

  4. Apply, or get found

Some programs take open applications. Many invitations follow work people can already point to.

Questions about startups on campus

Do I need to be a student?
No. Campus programs take students, postdocs, faculty, tech transfer staff and alumni. What matters is how close you are to early work.
Where does a campus startup get its first money?
Usually from grants, university funds and fellowships before any venture round. Each university page shows the programs and organizations around it.
Is this a conflict with my university role?
It can be, especially for faculty and anyone near tech transfer. Universities have conflict-of-interest policies for exactly this. Put it in writing, to your institution and to the program, before you act.
My campus is not listed. Can it be added?
Yes. Name the university and it gets added from its official sources.
Can Superscout get me into a program?
No. Programs choose who they take.
