Nature Index Research Leaders

Nature Index Research Leaders are annual tables ranking institutions and countries by their output of articles in a selected list of high-quality journals over one calendar year. Readers use the academic table as a hard-data signal of research strength, and it has tracked the rise of Chinese universities past most Western peers.

How the ranking works

Rankings use Share, a fractional count that splits each article's credit among its authors' affiliations, alongside Count (articles with at least one author from the institution). Only primary research articles in the index's journal list count. Each edition covers one calendar year (the 2026 edition covers 2025). In 2026 the journal list grew to 178 publications spanning applied, health, natural and social sciences (125,385 articles), which changes comparability with earlier editions.

Ranked positions: Each item has a position (1, 2, 3), with ties allowed. Institutions cannot apply or pay; the table is computed from author affiliations on articles in a fixed journal list. The publisher, Springer Nature, also publishes some of the tracked journals.

History

Nature Index launched in 2014 and has published annual tables since at least 2016 (branded Research Leaders; nature.com lists 2016 through 2026 editions). Harvard led the academic table every year from 2016 through 2025 on the figures now displayed. The journal list has been revised over time, most recently in 2026 with the addition of applied and social sciences, after which Zhejiang University took first place.

How it is received

Wikipedia's overview of university rankings describes Nature Index as tracking the affiliations of articles in a selected journal set with a global reputation for natural and life science research. It is widely cited in Chinese and Asian university communications as China's institutions have climbed. Because it counts only a curated set of journals, it measures a narrow slice of research output, and the selection is made by a publisher that owns some of those journals.

Strengths

  • Built from verifiable publication records with a simple, published counting method.
  • Free public tables with thousands of institutions.
  • Annual snapshot since 2016 shows long-run shifts, such as China's rise.
  • Separate tables by sector, subject and country.

Weaknesses

  • Covers only a curated journal list, not all research.
  • Journal-list changes (notably 2026) break comparability.
  • Share favors large, research-intensive institutions; no size normalization.
  • Compiled by a publisher that owns some of the tracked journals.
