Big Red Ventures (BRV) is one of the oldest and most established student-run venture capital funds in the United States, founded in 2001 at Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management. The fund operates as an evergreen venture capital vehicle entirely managed by MBA students, JDs, and PhD candidates, providing hands-on education in early-stage venture investing while deploying capital into promising startups.
BRV typically invests up to $25,000 in U.S.-based high-growth companies across all industries, with particular emphasis on companies based in New York State or with Cornell University affiliations. The fund's capital structure reflects its educational mission: initially funded by donations to Cornell University, BRV operates as a true evergreen fund where all proceeds are recycled for reinvestment, allowing the fund to grow and sustain itself over multiple decades.
The program serves dual purposes: providing rigorous venture capital training to graduate students while maintaining a productive investment portfolio. Fund managers conduct opportunity sourcing, detailed due diligence, investment recommendations, portfolio valuations, and prepare comprehensive investor materials including annual reports and shareholder meetings. This hands-on approach exposes students to the full lifecycle of venture investing.
