Fellowship
Alix Ventures—a seed‑focused TechBio fund—created the Residency to train the next generation of operator‑investors who will catalyze breakthroughs at the intersection of engineering & biology. Residents work 10–20 hours per week for six to twelve months, completing four progressive tracks: (1) market landscaping and thesis building; (2) founder sourcing and first‑pass diligence; (3) deep‑dive technical and commercial analyses alongside a partner; and (4) investment‑committee presentations that shape real pre‑seed checks.
The curriculum blends self‑paced modules (SAFE terms, regulatory pathways, biomanufacturing economics) with live partner roundtables and peer case‑study sessions. Residents receive one‑on‑one mentorship from the investment team, gain access to Alix’s proprietary TechBio database, and shadow partner calls with portfolio CEOs. Work products feed directly into memos for the core fund, giving fellows genuine influence on deployment decisions.
Graduates join a 120‑member alumni guild distributed across venture, Big Tech and scaling Bio‑Startups. The program is intentionally small—15 seats per cycle—to preserve a high‑touch experience and accelerate personal career goals, whether that’s launching a company, raising a micro‑fund or securing a full‑time role in VC or strategy.

Alix Ventures backs pre‑seed and seed‑stage “TechBio” companies—startups engineering biology with computational and automation tools to accelerate therapeutics, diagnostics and biomanufacturing—believing these platforms will drive radical advances in human health.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the cohort reaches capacity. Candidates submit a résumé, a short statement of interest and a one‑page teardown of a recent TechBio seed round. Selected applicants complete a 30‑minute Zoom interview focused on technical fluency, founder empathy and time availability. Historical acceptance is near one percent, reflecting the program’s small size and hands‑on nature.
The Residency is an educational, unpaid appointment. Residents do not contribute capital and do not receive carry; value is delivered through direct investment reps, proprietary data access and career placement support.
Residents allocate 10–20 hours weekly, typically split between two live calls, individual founder meetings, desk research and memo drafting. Schedules are flexible around work or graduate‑school commitments.
The fellowship is fully remote and asynchronous. Residents may join optional quarterly off‑sites in San Francisco or Boston for demo days and lab tours; travel stipends are not provided.
What is the goal of the Residency?
The Residency equips aspiring TechBio investors and founders with structured training and live deal exposure inside a specialist seed fund.
How competitive is admission?
Roughly one percent of applicants are accepted each cycle, ensuring a high‑touch experience.
Do Residents need VC experience?
No. Technical curiosity, founder access and the capacity to learn quickly are valued over prior investing roles.
Is the program paid?
No. The Residency is unpaid and carries no tuition; value comes from experience, network and placement support.
How long is the commitment?
Six months minimum with an option to extend to 12 months for deeper portfolio engagement.
Can Residents invest personal capital?
Yes, but only after compliance review and founder consent; personal checks do not affect the core fund’s terms.
What happens after graduation?
Alumni join a private Slack, receive ongoing mentorship and are prioritized for open roles at Alix Ventures and portfolio companies.
Are international applicants eligible?
Yes—the program is fully remote; time‑zone overlap for live calls is helpful but not mandatory.
What sectors does the fund focus on?
Synthetic biology, biomanufacturing, computational biology, and enablement tools that speed discovery and scale.
Does Alix guarantee full‑time jobs?
No guarantee, but the placement rate into VC or TechBio startups exceeds 80 percent within six months of completion.
