Barcelona is a thriving tech startup hub that has seen substantial growth over the past decade. The city boasts a robust startup ecosystem fueled by a variety of factors including strong governmental support, and an advantageous geographical position as a gateway to Latin America and the rest of Europe.
The city is home to Mobile World Capital Barcelona, an initiative which aims to empower new generations, professionals and entrepreneurs in a digital transformation. The initiative hosts the Mobile World Congress, the world's largest exhibition for the mobile industry, which is a hotbed for entrepreneurship and innovation.
Barcelona-based startups have seen some notable successes. Glovo, the on-demand delivery app, raised €150 million in a Series E funding round in 2019. Meanwhile, Typeform, a software that allows creating interactive forms, raised $70 million in Series B funding. Both are excellent examples of the growth potential available in this ecosystem.
Additionally, Barcelona has a strong venture capital presence. Prosus Ventures, Nauta Capital, Caixa Capital Risc and Active Venture Partners are some of the active investors in the city. These firms have contributed significantly to Barcelona's startup ecosystem by providing capital and support to promising startups.
In terms of successful founders, Carlos Pierre stands out. As CEO and founder of Badi, a room renting service, he has overseen the company's growth from a local Barcelona startup to one with international reach.
Overall, the combination of an open environment that fosters innovation, a strong support infrastructure, and a track record of successful startups, make Barcelona a standout city in terms of its startup and VC ecosystem.
