U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities
U.S. News' Best Global Universities ranks more than 2,000 research universities in over 100 countries on 13 indicators of research performance and global and regional reputation. It is separate from U.S. News' domestic college rankings and is used mainly as a research-strength benchmark.

How the ranking works
The ranking uses 13 indicators that, in U.S. News' words, measure universities' academic research performance and their global and regional reputations. Bibliometric inputs (publications, citations, highly cited papers, international collaboration) come largely from Clarivate's Web of Science and InCites; reputation indicators measure global and regional research reputation.
The second edition (2016) used 12 indicators across 750 universities; coverage has since expanded to more than 2,000 institutions. Undergraduate teaching is not measured, which U.S. News attributed to the lack of comparable data (per The Washington Post, as cited on Wikipedia).
Ranked positions: Each item has a position (1, 2, 3), with ties allowed. Universities do not apply or pay to be ranked; U.S. News draws on Clarivate bibliometric data and reputation survey results.

History
U.S. News published its first global ranking on October 28, 2014, covering 500 universities in 49 countries, after ranking American colleges since 1983. It made the list part of its regular annual programming in 2016, and coverage grew to 750 (2016), about 1,500 and then more than 2,000 institutions, alongside regional and subject tables.
Harvard has ranked first in every edition for which a table was reviewed here. U.S. News moved to split-year labels (for example 2026-2027) in recent editions.
How it is received
Forbes described the global ranking as grounded in "objective measures" and called it a "worthy" effort, in contrast to its criticism of U.S. News' domestic college rankings (as cited on Wikipedia). The Washington Post noted that undergraduate experience is excluded because comparable data are not available (as cited on Wikipedia).

- Edition labels 2017, 2022, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 are based on U.S. News' known naming pattern and were not confirmed from a primary page.
- The xuanxiao mirror's year labels and institution counts do not always match U.S. News' labels and published counts (for example 2,604 vs 2,250 for 2026-2027); mapping for 2024-2025 is inferred.
- The inaugural 2014 edition's label (sometimes called 2015) and table were not verified.
