How the ranking works
PitchBook tallies VC deal participation from its own database for companies it classifies in the segment, counting deals since 2019. Per the methodology note, 'lists of the most active investors are based on a tally of relevant deal types as defined by PitchBook', aligned with PitchBook report methodologies. The list is limited to VC investors and excludes angel groups, accelerators, incubators and growth investors, among other investor types. Each firm card also shows exits, median deal size and select portfolio companies. For this list the segment covers AI neoclouds, LLM management software, AI-specific chipmakers and data center startups.
Ranked positions: Each item has a position (1, 2, 3), with ties allowed. Firms cannot apply or pay to be included; the list is drawn from PitchBook's deal database. PitchBook sells data subscriptions to many of the ranked firms, and the article is free to read.

History
First published August 7, 2026 by Jacob Robbins, described by PitchBook as its 'inaugural list of the most active VCs in AI infrastructure'. No later edition exists yet.
How it is received
The lists are widely syndicated (for example on Yahoo Finance) and used by founders as a quick map of who writes the most checks in a segment. No attributable published criticism of these specific lists was found. The general limitation, noted in the lists' own framing, is that deal counts reward volume and say nothing about check size, lead roles or returns (the cards show median deal size and exits separately).
Strengths
- Based on a large proprietary deal database rather than surveys or submissions.
- Each firm card shows deal count, exits, median deal size and example portfolio companies.
- Free to read and short enough to scan in a minute.
- Explicit exclusion of angel groups, accelerators and growth investors keeps the list to VC firms.
Weaknesses
- Deal counts reward volume, so high-frequency small-check investors can outrank concentrated lead investors.
- Segment definitions (what counts as generative AI, infrastructure or agents) are PitchBook's own and not fully published.
- The ranked list sits in an embedded chart rather than article text, which makes it harder to cite and archive.
- Only ten firms are shown, so it says little about the wider field.
Open questions
Facts not verified yet. They stay visible so they are not mistaken for settled facts.
- Cadence is unknown; the generative AI list it accompanies is annual, so this may recur.
- The tie-break rule for ranks 7 to 9 (37 deals each) is not stated.
