Overview

The CIFAR Global Scholars Program (the CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars) supports early-career researchers in their first years as independent principal investigators. Scholars join one of CIFAR's interdisciplinary research programs for two years, including Brain, Mind & Consciousness, and meet twice a year with CIFAR Fellows and Advisors around the world.

Scholars receive CAD 100,000 in unrestricted research support, can apply for CIFAR seed funds for high-risk collaborations, join the Global Scholars community, and take the Azrieli Foundation Leadership Development Program in team leadership, mentorship, science communication and advocacy.

For the 2027-2029 cohort, programs recruiting are Boundaries, Membership & Belonging; Brain, Mind & Consciousness; Fungal Kingdom; Healthy Microbiomes; and Innovation, Equity & the Future of Prosperity. Applications are open until November 4, 2026 at 12:00 PM Eastern.

Who it is for

  • PhD (or equivalent).
  • Full-time independent PI position at a higher education or research institution, secure from April 1, 2027 to March 31, 2029 (tenure-track or equivalent).
  • First such position started between July 1, 2022 and December 31, 2026.
  • Research that fits a recruiting CIFAR program.
  • Available for a virtual interview March 23 to 25, 2027; able to travel 2 to 3 times a year; fluent in English.
  • Postdocs are not eligible. Open to all countries.

Apply through CIFAR's portal by November 4, 2026, 12:00 PM EST. Shortlisted candidates are invited to interview by mid-February 2027; virtual interviews March 23 to 25, 2027; results by early April 2027; public announcement in May 2027.
