Founder Coach
A Founder Coach is a professional coach who partners with startup founders in structured, goal-oriented reflection and action; the role facilitates the founder's thinking and development rather than taking operating authority, and it must be distinguished explicitly when the same person also mentors, advises, assesses, or provides therapy.
What the role involves
- 01
Before work begins, the coach co-creates an agreement covering goals, roles, responsibilities, session cadence, confidentiality, fees, cancellation, and any sponsor-reporting boundaries.
responsibility
- 02
During sessions, the coach creates trust, listens actively, asks open questions, reflects patterns, and supports the founder in choosing specific next steps.
responsibility
- 03
The coach conducts an initial assessment and goal-setting conversation and establishes the engagement cadence and boundaries.
task
- 04
The coach follows up on commitments using action logs, accountability check-ins, reflective journals, or shared progress documents.
task
- 05
The coach uses open-ended questions, active listening, reflective summaries, and supportive challenge to surface assumptions and options.
task
What shapes the decisions
- 01
The coach is constrained by competence limits, ethical boundaries, confidentiality agreements, legal disclosure duties, conflicts of interest, sponsor reporting rules, and the founder's right to terminate.

People and working context
- 01
Core counterparties are the founder-client, any sponsoring organization or program, and, when referral is needed, another coach or appropriately qualified professional.
