Field overview

Grid-enhancing technologies, usually shortened to GETs, are hardware and software that let transmission owners use existing lines more effectively. The core category includes dynamic line ratings, advanced power-flow control, topology optimization or transmission switching, and advanced conductors.

This sector is narrower than smart grid. General distribution automation, storage, cybersecurity, demand response, and grid software belong here only when they directly unlock or manage transmission capacity.

Technologies

Core technologies are dynamic line rating, ambient-adjusted rating, advanced power-flow controllers, flexible AC transmission devices, topology optimization, transmission switching, advanced conductors, monitoring sensors, forecasting, and the operational software that identifies and manages usable transmission capacity.

Applications

Common use cases include increasing transfer capacity on congested corridors, reducing renewable curtailment, accelerating interconnection, rerouting power around constrained lines, improving contingency response, reconductoring inside existing rights-of-way, and deferring selected network upgrades.

Market and funding

Investment spans specialist climate funds, utility-backed corporate venture firms, strategic infrastructure companies, public research funding, and later-stage growth capital. The first Superscout release links more than 20 investors to disclosed financings in LineVision, Heimdall Power, TS Conductor, Smart Wires, Ampacimon, and Reactive Technologies.
