How the ranking works
Honorees are chosen by Forbes editors with outside judges and industry experts from public nominations, including self-nominations; candidates must be under 30 as of the eligibility date. Forbes cites innovation, impact and leadership as criteria. Nominations grew from over 15,000 by 2016 to over 100,000 by 2022 (as summarized on Wikipedia).
The list is unranked within categories and relies on editorial judgment, not a scored model. Categories have been added, merged and renamed over time; the Venture Capital category appears in every class from 2015 to 2026 in Forbes data.
Unranked list: Inclusion is the honor. No positions are published. Anyone under 30 can be nominated, including self-nominations, free of charge; Forbes editors and outside judges pick 30 per category. No fee to apply or be listed.

History
Forbes launched 30 Under 30 in 2011 under editor Randall Lane, with the first class labeled 2012. The US list grew to 600 honorees in 20 categories, and Forbes added regional editions for Asia and Europe (2016) and Africa.
Category lineups have changed several times, which limits year-over-year comparison at category level.
How it is received
The list is widely used as a recognition badge, but critics point to a record of honorees later charged or convicted, which Forbes itself addressed in a 2023 'hall of shame' article covering Sam Bankman-Fried (Class of 2021), Charlie Javice (Class of 2019) and Martin Shkreli (Class of 2013) (per Wikipedia). Early lists drew criticism for lack of diversity, for example from The Root on the 2011 media list and Elle South Africa on gender balance in 2014.
In venture, a Venture Capital category placement is read mainly as a signal of an investor's early reputation and firm sponsorship rather than of returns.
Strengths
- Large, well-known list with a long run of classes.
- Free to nominate, including self-nomination.
- Venture Capital category surfaces early-career investors who later appear on Midas lists.
- Public profiles with firm and title for each honoree.
Weaknesses
- Editorial selection with no published scoring.
- Unranked, so it cannot separate honorees within a category.
- Notable honorees later faced fraud charges, raising questions about vetting.
- Category structure changes over time.
