CWUR ranks the top 2,000 of more than 20,000 universities using outcome measures for alumni, faculty and research, without surveys or university-submitted data. It is smaller in profile than QS, THE and ARWU but offers the widest published list among them.

How the ranking works
CWUR uses seven indicators in four areas: Education (25%, alumni academic success relative to size), Employability (25%, alumni professional success relative to size), Faculty (10%, distinguished faculty), and Research (40%, split evenly across research output, high-quality publications, influence and citations). CWUR states that it relies on neither surveys nor university data submissions.
The published list grew from a top 100 (2012 and 2013) to the top 1,000 (2014 to 2018-19) and to the Global 2000 list by 2022-23. CWUR reports ranking 21,291 institutions for the 2026 edition.
Ranked positions: Each item has a position (1, 2, 3), with ties allowed. Universities do not apply, submit data or pay to be ranked; CWUR says it uses no surveys or university submissions. CWUR describes itself as a consulting organization as well as a publisher, so ranked universities can be clients.

History
CWUR published its first ranking, a top 100, in July 2012 and expanded to 1,000 institutions in 2014. Editions were labeled by single year through 2017, then by academic year (2018-19 to 2022-23), and by single year again from 2023. Release timing has shifted between April and October; recent editions came out in May or June.
Harvard has ranked first in every edition; CWUR's 2022-23 press release noted the 11th consecutive year. CWUR announced a collaboration with Rossiya Segodnya in January 2018 (per its media page). The organization is based in the United Arab Emirates, per Wikipedia.
How it is received
CWUR has a lower public profile than QS, THE or ARWU. Wikipedia describes it as relying on outcome-based measures rather than surveys or university data submissions, which is also CWUR's own main claim of distinctiveness.
No detailed independent critique was found in the sources reviewed. CWUR's description of itself as a consulting organization that sells services to institutions is a potential conflict of interest that readers should weigh.
