How the ranking works

Counts are drawn from Crunchbase's venture funding database for rounds into companies Crunchbase tags as fintech, worldwide. Each article reports several short lists: most deals overall, most deals in rounds of $5 million or more, most leads in $5 million+ rounds, most leads in $100 million+ megarounds, most seed deals and most post-seed leads. Data are a snapshot as of a stated date (for example April 6, 2026 for Q1 2026) and later revisions to Crunchbase data are not reflected.

The articles are prose with charts; they typically name only the top three to five investors per cut, so no full ranked table is published. Accelerators (notably Y Combinator) and corporate or crypto venture arms are included.

Ranked positions: Each item has a position (1, 2, 3), with ties allowed. Investors cannot apply or pay; rankings are drawn from Crunchbase funding data. Crunchbase sells data subscriptions, and investors can edit their own Crunchbase profiles, which feed the data.

History

The earliest article found in this format is 'Y Combinator Amps Up Investing In Fintech Startups In 2025' (September 25, 2025, data through September 11, 2025). It was followed by a full-year 2025 review (February 3, 2026) and quarterly pieces for Q1 2026 (April 15, 2026) and Q2 2026 (July 24, 2026). Crunchbase News has long run general 'most active investors' roundups, of which these fintech pieces are a sector cut.

How it is received

The pieces are widely syndicated (for example on CryptoRank) and cited as a quick read on fintech deal flow. No attributable criticism of the fintech lists specifically was found. Known limits of Crunchbase data in general (lagging and incomplete round coverage, reliance on announcements) apply.

Strengths

  • Timely: published within weeks of quarter end.
  • Several cuts (all rounds, $5M+, leads, seed) give a fuller picture than a single count.
  • Free to read.
  • Hard deal-count data from a large database.

Weaknesses

  • Only the top three to five names per cut are published; there is no full table.
  • Crunchbase data can lag and change after publication.
  • The headline metric varies between articles (all rounds vs $5M+ rounds).
  • Accelerators and investors of all types are mixed with VC firms.
