Overview

CHADWICK is an ARPA-E program supporting the development of durable fusion first-wall materials that can maintain performance under irradiation. Its technical categories cover plasma-facing materials (Category A), structural materials (Category B), and analysis and end-user communication supporting Category A and/or B teams (Category C). (Claims 7418–7421)

The 2024 funding call allowed applicants to propose Category A, Category B, both A and B, or Category C based on their expertise. That call’s application process and deadlines are historical: applications were submitted through ARPA-E eXCHANGE, and the full application deadline was May 21, 2024. ARPA-E’s program page labels CHADWICK active as of October 1, 2026; that label does not establish that applications are currently open. (Claims 7417, 7422, 7424–7425)

Who it is for

For the 2024 call, U.S. citizens or permanent residents could apply as individuals, but an individual award required the applicant to form an entity. U.S.-incorporated for-profit companies, educational institutions, and nonprofits could apply alone or participate on a team. DOE laboratories could participate on qualifying teams but could not apply alone. Foreign entities could apply, subject to a U.S.-formed affiliate or subsidiary receiving the funding. These are eligibility terms for the 2024 call, not confirmation of eligibility for a future round.

Admissions and application

The 2024 CHADWICK call required registration and submission through ARPA-E eXCHANGE, with a compliant concept paper required before a full application. Its full application deadline was May 21, 2024; that deadline has passed. ARPA-E directs prospective applicants to eXCHANGE to check currently open funding calls, but this general guidance does not establish a new CHADWICK application round.

Timeline

ARPA-E lists January 11, 2024 as CHADWICK’s release date. The 2024 call’s full application deadline was May 21, 2024, and ARPA-E announced funding for 13 projects on September 27, 2024. As of October 1, 2026, the program page displayed 12 projects; this differs from the 2024 announcement count, and the available evidence does not explain the difference.

How to go about it

  1. Read what it asks for

Who can apply, how people get in and whether it is open right now.

  2. Have something to show

Programs pick people whose work they can already point to. Put yours where it can be found.

  3. Apply the way the program asks

The program has not published how to apply. Terms and dates change. Check the official page before you act.

What it pays

The 2024 funding opportunity anticipated approximately $30 million in total funding, subject to appropriations. Separately, ARPA-E announced $29.8 million for 13 CHADWICK-managed projects on September 27, 2024. These figures describe the historical call and award announcement, not funding available through a current intake.
