AE Studio

AE Studio is a ~160-person, fully bootstrapped applied AI company. We've spent over a decade building and shipping production AI for clients in finance, defense, aviation, healthcare, and education, including generating millions per week in additional revenue for a major airline and building the AI-enabled school of the future, where students are performing in the top 1% nationally. Without outside investors we are able to choose where the money goes, and we put it into alignment research through the AI Alignment Foundation, a nonprofit we founded to scale this work. We're running a DARPA seedling on alignment and control, our policy team engages directly with the government on AI alignment, and our work has been featured many times in the Wall Street Journal. We collaborate with researchers at Anthropic, Princeton University, University College London, Redwood Research, and MATS. The research team is 25 people and growing. About this role We need our first in-house lawyer. Demand and our own expansion have outpaced what we can handle today: research grants closing, government and national-security work opening up, university and lab partnerships forming, and a shift toward outcome-based commercial work. All of it carries real legal weight and business urgency, and today it sits largely on the founders' shoulders, backed by excellent outside counsel. You'd start by learning what already works here and helping scale it, then improving and adapting it as new opportunities arise. The timing is the real opportunity: we're 10 years in, established and growing fast, and right at the start of a major inflection point. You'd be here during a step change. What you'll work on A handful of things are happening at once, and the legal side of each is the core of the role. We're shifting the commercial business toward outcome-based and productized work. That moves delivery ownership to us, meaning stronger margins and tighter focus on outcomes; you'd shape these deal terms. Major research grants are coming in to fund our foundational AI Alignment work, and you'd help us win them and put them to work. Government agencies, research labs, and universities are coming to us to collaborate. These partnerships are often first-of-their-kind, and you'd help shape them. Our government work is expanding fast, opening a category of contracts and programs that are new ground for us and full of upside. Intellectual property runs through all of it, and there's real opportunity in how we own, license, protect, and publish it. Underneath sit the steady in-house workstreams: NDAs and vendor agreements, employment, corporate governance, and the processes that let legal scale. About you We're after a strong generalist more than a specialist: solid fundamentals, judgment from real experience, and the ability to pick up new areas fast and get good at them. Day to day you'd work alongside executives, making the key calls and scaling the function. Specifically, someone with: Real business sense. You read the gap between strict interpretation and what's sensible, see where the real risk sits, and give practical guidance. A negotiator who stays flexible but takes care of us, and knows which terms are worth fighting for. A clear translator in both directions: turn complex business dynamics into plain strategy, and translate business goals into the right legal structure. No-job-too-small instincts. A one-page NDA and a government contracting strategy are both yours, handled without ego. A technical background, or deep experience with technology and technical people. You're comfortable around AI and can hold your own with engineers. An AI-native way of working. You use the latest AI tools in your own legal practice to move faster and go deeper, and you do it with care for confidentiality, accuracy, and privilege. Strong organizational and process skills and a systems mind, with an ownership mentality for building. Creativity and the hunger to find the best answer, including approaches most lawyers wouldn't reach for. A real partnership with outside counsel: when to bring them in, how to brief them, and how to get the most out of them. Alignment with how we operate. We move fast, take high-variance bets, care a lot about getting things right, and own our outcomes. Requirements JD from an accredited law school, with active, good-standing membership in the California bar (open to options for exceptional out-of-state candidates). Required: real strength in commercial transactions and in technology/AI work. Ideal: experience across IP, nonprofit, grants, and government. You'll touch all of these here, and growing into some is fine. Enough experience to have real judgment, usually substantial in-house time and/or strong firm training. We weigh judgment, adaptability, and business instinct as heavily as years or a prior GC title. Complete integrity and discretion with sensitive matters. Comfort in a fast, ambiguous, high-ownership environment. Logistics We are open to either full-time to start or starting on a fractional/consulting basis and convert to full-time as the work and fit develop. Ideally Los Angeles; remote considered for the right person, with regular travel to HQ. Compensation & Benefits Good-faith base salary range (full-time) is $225,000 - $300,000, plus variable compensation and equity participation. If starting as an initial fractional engagement, compensation is a mutually agreed rate or retainer based on scope. Remote-first with flexible schedules, health insurance, free lunches at the office, weekly knowledge-sharing talks, and an annual team retreat. Regular performance-based raises and a diversified employee equity program.

Managing Director - Great Lakes Innovation Accelerator Location: Chicago, IL Salary: $150,000 - $175,000 Description Do you know the water and ocean technology sector, and want to spend your time getting the best companies in it to market?? Do you want to support the best and brightest entrepreneurs tackling some of our biggest water challenges? Are you committed to providing opportunities across race, place and gender? If so, this position is for you! gener8tor fosters innovation ecosystems through its accelerator programs, venture capital funds, and skills-based workforce initiatives. With a strong track record of supporting high-growth companies, gener8tor has expanded across the U.S. and internationally, building partnerships with governments, corporations, universities and economic development organizations to drive entrepreneurship and economic impact. gener8tor operates accelerators across 50 cities, 32 states and 9 countries, working with more than 300 startups per year. To date, gener8tor has worked with more than 2,300 startups that have cumulatively gone on to raise more than $3B in financing and employ more than 15,600 people. gener8tor is a nationally recognized startup accelerator and entrepreneurial support organization and is seeking a Managing Director (MD) to lead the Great Lakes Innovation Accelerator (GLIA) in Chicago, IL. This program is supported by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and runs three 12-week programs per year, each investing $100,000 of non-dilutive funding into five startups (15 per year) focused on Ocean Enterprise innovation, including water measurement, observation, forecasting, and data-driven solutions that benefit the Great Lakes ecosystem and drive water-related advancement globally. Note that this is non-dilutive, grant-funded capital. You will deploy roughly $1.5M per year into founders without taking equity, and without carry. As Managing Director, you will be responsible for recruiting, selecting, and investing in the most promising early-stage water tech and ocean enterprise startups, while building relationships with ecosystem partners to strengthen the support system for your portfolio. You bring real investment acumen. You understand early-stage funding dynamics, know how to position a company for seed, and can speak credibly to what it takes to get a startup to Series A+. You also bring operator depth: you can get into the weeds with founders on financial modeling, go-to-market strategy, and pitch decks, and you coach founders through commercialization. You will work directly with our current partners, including the Great Lakes Observing System, Michigan Tech's Great Lakes Research Center, Cleveland Water Alliance, and the Northern Michigan Blue Economy Consortium. You will be gener8tor's face in the Great Lakes water community and a direct point of contact with our federal partners at NOAA. Success for an MD looks like building a strong portfolio of early-stage water tech startups, investing in the best and brightest founders, and making the Great Lakes region a leading hub for water innovation. You will develop relationships with a personally curated group of mentors, investors and community partners to engage with founders while bending over backward to ensure the startups are set up for success. You will report to the Senior Managing Director of Sustainability while collaborating across the organization with gener8tor's centralized support teams. Responsibilities Recruit startup applicants and lead the due diligence and selection process for three cohorts of five water tech and ocean enterprise startups per year, with a mandate to build a materially larger and higher-quality top-of-funnel. Find and develop relationships with mentors, investors, and others who can help support the program and its founders. Act as the lead mentor, cheerleader and point of contact for startups before, during and after the program, including hands-on coaching on financial modeling, go-to-market strategy, fundraising positioning, and deck development. Continuously monitor and update progress for each startup post-program. Build relationships with ecosystem partners and engage in the broader Great Lakes water tech community. Think of yourself as the unofficial "Startup Mayor" of water tech. Plan logistics, engage with the network, execute the accelerator programs and other related activities. Coordinate and collaborate with gener8tor staff and external program partners. Manage relationships with external program partners by providing ongoing updates, program reporting and key metrics. Support the decision-making process on TDC award allocation and any follow-on support for portfolio companies. Assist alumni with ongoing mentor, sponsor and investor relations following the program. Support the program's federal reporting obligations, including quarterly startup reporting, subrecipient monitoring across six partner organizations, and administration of the $100,000 Technology Development and Commercialization awards. Represent the program with NOAA and the broader IOOS community, including the other Ocean Enterprise award winners. Be the #1 cheerleader for the water tech and ocean enterprise ecosystem and the startups and entrepreneurs we work with. Contribute to the gener8tor team’s broader initiatives, including supporting other accelerator programs, engaging in ecosystem-building efforts, and assisting with strategic projects as needed. Requirements Demonstrated experience in water, ocean, environmental, or adjacent hard-tech sectors. You can evaluate a sensing, autonomy, treatment, or remote sensing company on the technology as well as the business, and you are credible with utilities, research institutions, and federal agencies. Entrepreneurial spirit and a self-starter. Experience as a founder, employee in a venture-backed company. Operating experience inside a water or ocean technology company counts. Comfort with capital-intensive hardware companies that have long development cycles, pilot-dependent sales, and regulatory exposure. Software-only backgrounds are not a fit for this portfolio. Collaborative, team-based mindset. You will be working closely with other Managing Directors, founders, external program partners, and ecosystem stakeholders. You are expected to support the overall sustainability team. Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly independent environment and juggle multiple ongoing projects, responsibilities and external relationships. Willingness to intensively and rapidly dive deeper into the startup and venture capital communities even if already familiar. Experience with federally funded programs is strongly preferred. This role carries real compliance responsibility under a NOAA cooperative agreement. Flexibility to travel up to 25%, work some nights and weekends. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. A “no job is beneath me” mentality. This is a build role. The program is in its second year of a four-year award with renewal conversations ahead. The person in this seat will shape what the Great Lakes Innovation Accelerator becomes. Commitment to equity across race, place and gender. At gener8tor we… See genius in every community. We believe the company has a chance to accomplish a generational challenge in bridging genius with opportunity. Never self-defeat and have a “play to win” mentality. We revolve everything we do around helping the entrepreneurs in our programs. Are curious. We work hard to find hidden gems others overlook. Believe no job is beneath us . We wipe down the tables and load up the U-Hauls with enthusiasm. Work as a team to get things done! Strive for “that guy emailed me.” Based on a story from our founders, we share a commitment to take a bottom-up approach to building strong, personal, 1-1 relationships. We believe that the best way to quality is through quantity. Our values are core to how we work . If they don’t resonate with you, this role might not be the right fit. You will own campaign performance from strategy and setup through optimization, measurement, and reporting. You will partner closely with the Meta, Funnels & AI Performance Coach, Brand & Creative Director, Messaging & Copy Strategist, and teams across marketing and sales. REQUIREMENTS - 5+ hands-on paid media experience owning Meta campaigns and at least one additional major platform, with accountability for meaningful budgets and business results. - Advanced analytical ability across advertising platforms, GA4, dashboards, and business data, with a record of turning performance signals into timely decisions. - Hands-on experience implementing and auditing pixels, conversion APIs, UTM structures, conversion events, and server-side tracking, plus a practical understanding of attribution limits. - Demonstrated discipline in designing, running, and documenting experiments, with the judgment to turn findings into stronger creative, messaging, offers, and funnels. - Clear, leadership-ready communication skills, current knowledge of paid platform changes, and practical experience using AI to improve repeatable workflows. RESULTS - Meta campaigns are fully owned and consistently optimized against agreed CAC, ROAS, lead-quality, revenue, and profitability targets. - Monthly spend remains within 5% of plan, with material pacing risks identified and addressed early. - Tracking and conversion measurement are audited regularly, with major gaps identified, communicated, and resolved promptly. - At least two structured tests per active platform are completed each month, with hypotheses, outcomes, and next actions documented. - Weekly reports arrive on time, monthly reviews are delivered by the fifth business day, and quarterly channel-expansion recommendations include audience, budget, and test design. ROLE The Corporate Counsel is Acquisition.com http://Acquisition.com's day-to-day, first-line legal resource and the General Counsel's primary force multiplier. The advisory practice, live workshops and events, sales, marketing, operations, and the technology products that support them all bring their legal questions here first. This person answers most matters on their own, directs the paralegal and legal operations specialist to keep intake and contracts moving, and escalates to the General Counsel immediately when a matter calls for it. This is a hands-on, high-volume role. Requests get picked up when they arrive, not queued. Nobody has to ask twice. The work stays excellent at that pace. RESPONSIBILITIES COMMERCIAL & CORPORATE - Drafts, reviews, and negotiates agreements across the business, including vendor contracts, MSAs, NDAs, SOWs, sponsorship and partnership agreements, and event and venue contracts. - Carries a mixed docket of dozens of open matters across entities and business units, and re-prioritizes constantly without dropping anything. - Owns day-to-day privacy, data protection, and information security questions, including consent practices and vendor data terms. Escalates regulatory strategy to the General Counsel. - Supports the General Counsel on investment documents, diligence, and litigation matters (drafting, discovery, and outside counsel coordination) as needed. MARKETING & SALES COMPLIANCE - Reviews marketing, advertising, and sales materials for FTC Act Section 5 compliance, including testimonials, earnings claims, and required disclosures. - Advises sales on outbound calling and texting compliance, including the TCPA and state telemarketing rules. - Works with marketing, sales, and technology to keep improving the compliance program. LEGAL OPERATIONS - Directs the paralegal and legal operations specialist, including workload, day-to-day priorities, and development. - Owns intake quality: scopes unclear requests up front and reframes the ask before work starts, not after. - Holds the same-day acknowledgment standard. Every request gets a response, an owner, and a realistic timeline, even when the full answer takes longer. - Maintains and improves templates, playbooks, and AI-assisted workflows so turnaround time keeps falling as volume grows. CROSS-FUNCTIONAL PARTNERSHIP - Serves as the standing legal contact for internal teams, so they get fast answers without going through the general counsel. - Flags risk and negotiation leverage to procurement and business owners during vendor and partner discussions. - Reviews people operations forms, policies, and processes, with the general counsel as primary on anything ELT-sensitive. - Finds problems, owns them, and drives them to resolution. RESULTS - Intake runs on a defined process with clear SLAs. The business knows where to go and what to expect. Deadlines are met, and when a timeline has to move, the business hears about it early and knows why. - The general counsel is freed from day-to-day contract and tactical work to focus on litigation, regulatory strategy, and board-level matters. - Internal teams treat this role as their first call for legal questions, not a bottleneck. - Business leaders describe legal as fast, commercially practical, and worth looping in early. Legal is part of the conversation before signature, not after it. - The paralegal and legal operations specialist are clearly directed, growing, and working as one unit. REQUIREMENTS - J.D. and active bar membership in good standing. - 3+ years of relevant experience, including in-house at a high-growth company, covering commercial contracts, compliance, corporate governance, and general business advising. - Hands-on experience with FTC Act Section 5 and advertising compliance. Experience with GDPR, CCPA, and the TCPA strongly preferred. - Experience running and improving legal operations: intake workflows, contract lifecycle management, matter tracking, or legal technology. - Experience directing paralegal or legal operations staff. - Background supporting advisory, professional services, events, or tech businesses preferred. Investment or fund exposure is a plus. - Uses AI and automation first, while knowing where human review is required. - Explains legal issues clearly to non-lawyers and builds trust across sales, operations, marketing, and vendor-facing teams. HOW YOU OPERATE - You act as a business partner, not a checkpoint, and you get to yes in ways that make sense for the business. - You say no rarely enough that it carries weight. When you do, you hold the position under pressure and offer a workable alternative, so the business leaves with a path forward rather than a blocker. - You separate material risk from noise, decide quickly with imperfect information, and treat speed as an advantage rather than a trade-off against quality. - You know exactly when a matter belongs with the general counsel, and you escalate it without hesitation. - Excellence is the baseline, not the goal. LOCATION - Remote, USA - Some light travel to Las Vegas may be required COMPENSATION - $158,000 - $238,000 base salary + 10% bonus - The salary range may be inclusive of several levels that would be applicable to the position. Final salary will be based on a number of factors including, level, relevant prior experience, skills, and expertise. This range is only inclusive of base salary, not benefits (more details below). BENEFITS: We offer a comprehensive, evolving benefits package designed to support your health, family, and wellbeing. Some key offerings: - Flexible Unlimited Paid Time Off and Company-wide Holidays - Employer sponsored Medical, Dental, & Vision plans - $1,950 annual Employer HSA contribution - FSA options including dependent care - Employee assistance program and mental health resources - Employer match program for 401(k), eligible for both Traditional and Roth accounts - $1,200 annual wellness reimbursement through JOON https://joon.io/ that supports health, family care, pet care, fitness, and more! - For local or visiting team members, enjoy access to a state of the art gym at our HQ in Las Vegas * Benefits eligibility applies only to full-time exempt roles. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR: Our portfolio company is hiring a Director of Operations to run the business day to day so the founders can focus on strategic execution. You will lead the corporate team and own the operating systems behind our studios, including people operations, recruiting, the call center, inventory and warehouse operations, payroll, facilities, vendors, compliance coordination, and the weekly operating cadence. This is a hands-on leadership role. You will make decisions, solve operating problems directly, and build the people and processes that prevent those problems from returning. You should be comfortable moving between a location issue, a hiring decision, a payroll exception, a vendor choice, and a leadership conversation on the same day. WHAT YOU’LL DO: - Lead day-to-day operations across the studio network, corporate team, call center, scheduling, inventory, and warehouse. - Own recruiting, performance management, talent reviews, and workforce planning, with the People Lead reporting to you. - Build and run scorecards, operating reviews, and a weekly accountability cadence for studio partners, regional leaders, and corporate functions. - Run payroll and back-office administration accurately and on time, including corrections and exception handling. - Make facilities, vendor, and location-spend decisions within agreed authority limits, then communicate decisions and business impact clearly. - Coordinate the operational response to labor, compliance, and legal matters by gathering facts, engaging qualified counsel when needed, and bringing the founders a recommendation with clear options. - Identify recurring operating problems, address the immediate issue, and install a process, owner, and measure that prevents repeat failure. - Resolve routine operating decisions are resolved at your level, and provide founders with clear updates rather than unresolved problems. WHAT YOU BRING: - Experience leading operations across multiple brick-and-mortar locations, such as a regional, district, multi-unit, or general-management role. - Direct experience with several of the following: payroll, recruiting, performance management, facilities, vendor management, inventory, scheduling, or call-center operations. - Evidence that you can lead a team while remaining close enough to the work to diagnose problems and act quickly. - Sound judgment about when to decide independently, when to gather more information, and when to involve founders or qualified counsel. - A practical approach to tools, contractors, automation, and AI that improves execution without adding unnecessary headcount. - Clear written and verbal communication, strong follow-through, and a record of holding teams accountable to measurable standards. - Ability to meet the role's travel requirements and work effectively from a remote base near a major US airport. WHAT YOU'LL DELIVER: - Every location has a current scorecard, a named owner, and a consistent weekly review cadence that runs without founder involvement. - Inventory is accurate and reconciled, the call center meets its booking targets, scheduling gaps decline, and payroll runs cleanly and on time. - Open studio-partner and corporate roles move through an active hiring funnel, and performance management improves the quality and consistency of each team. - Studio-partner and employee turnover decline, weaker locations stabilize against clear operating standards, and location profitability improves. - New locations open on plan and build toward the target of $20,000 in monthly profit per location once ramped. - The operating system supports growth from 25 to roughly 40 locations over three years without a decline in quality, contributing to the company's target of approximately $7 million-$8 million in annual EBITDA at 40 or more locations. LOCATION + TRAVEL: - This role is remote-based and can be located anywhere in the United States near a major airport. Expect travel of up to 80% to our portfolio company's studio locations, with more travel possible during the first 90 days while you establish accountability systems on site. Travel is expected to settle to a lower steady rate once the weekly operating cadence is established. - Our locations cluster in Arizona, Texas, and Nevada. Candidates near Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, or Reno are preferred, but proximity to one of these cities is not required. COMPENSATION - $140,000-$160,000 base salary - 30% performance bonus max based on milestones - Health, dental, and vision coverage - Paid time off - Retirement match Disclaimer: The footer section below pertains to ACQ's benefits and core values and portfolio company benefits and core values will differ.
