Techstars

Techstars is building an operating system that centralizes how we run accelerator programs, support founders, engage the network, and drive investment decisions. As a Senior Full Stack Engineer you'll own features end to end — from the data behind them to the React UI in front of them, from design to go-live. That includes the AI-native parts of the product: search that spans the network, retrieval over founder and portfolio data, and assistive workflows that put the right context in front of the right person. You'll also lead the wind-down of our legacy founder tools, consolidating what matters into OS and retiring the rest cleanly. This is a small, high-trust team. We move fast, ship real things, and expect everyone to be able to hold a thread all the way through. What you will do Own features on Techstars OS end to end — design, build, test, and ship, from data ingestion and API layers through to the web app Build AI-native features into the product: semantic and federated search across the network, retrieval over portfolio and founder data, and assistive workflows that surface the right context at the right moment Lead the migration and shutdown of legacy founder tools — including Techstars Universe and our application management system — consolidating functionality into OS or retiring it cleanly Work across our Enterprise Data Platform and OS to build the pipelines that feed real-time features, search, and AI use cases Raise the floor on reliability and velocity: tests, code review, and CI/CD practices that hold up as the team grows — including how we fold AI coding tools into that loop Act as a technical resource for the team — unblock others, weigh in on architecture, and keep context moving across time zones What you bring Strong TypeScript and Python, and the judgment to know when to reach for each Solid React experience — you can build clean, functional UIs without a dedicated frontend team carrying you Proficiency with relational databases: data modeling, migrations, and query performance under real load. We use PostgreSQL Experience building data pipelines end to end — ingestion, transformation, and delivery to downstream consumers. We use event streaming, but experience with any comparable system transfers Experience shipping LLM-backed features to production: retrieval, embeddings, and the evaluation loop that keeps quality honest. You understand the hard part is uncertainty, evidence, and recovery — not the API call Comfortable operating containerized services in a major cloud with infrastructure defined as code. We run on GCP and AWS A track record of owning features from zero to production, and of retiring old systems without breaking things downstream Strong written communication and a high tolerance for autonomy — remote-first means writing well and staying aligned without being chased Nice to have Event-driven architectures and Kafka-based data platforms Evaluation and observability for LLM features — you've had to answer "is this actually working?" with data MCP or other tool surfaces that let agents act on production systems safely Identity and auth systems (Keycloak or similar) Search infrastructure (OpenSearch or similar) Next.js and Material UI Financial or investment data — venture capital, startup portfolio management Prior work at an accelerator, investment firm, or high-growth startup Compensation & Benefits Salary Range: $120,000 - $150,000 Benefits: Techstars offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) retirement plan, and paid time off. About Techstars Since 2006, Techstars has been investing in the world’s most ambitious founders. We find great founders early, through a global network two decades in the making, and back them with capital, mentorship, and the connections they need to grow. www.techstars.com Techstars is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, age, national origin, religion, physical or mental handicaps or disabilities, marital status, Veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity nor any other basis prohibited by law. We’ve invested in companies like Anduril, Airbnb, Coinbase, Cursor, Databricks, Deel, Figma, GitHub, Roblox, SpaceX, and Stripe. Our team is at the forefront of new technology, helping founders and their companies impact and change the world. The Role We're hiring a Lead Engineer, Incident Response to lead and shape a16z's detection and response team. This is a hands-on role: you'll spend a significant portion of your time investigating incidents, writing and reviewing detections, building automation, and making the harder technical response decisions. You'll also manage and develop the engineers on the team. You'll build and improve detection and response capabilities across the firm's cloud, SaaS, identity, and endpoint environments, shaping the roadmap, tooling, threat hunting, and response practices. You'll also develop capabilities to protect the firm against impersonation and fraud. You'll work closely with Security Engineering, IT, Legal, Compliance, and other cross-functional teams to put these capabilities into practice and turn lessons from incidents into better detections, tooling, and controls. Venture capital firms face threats that extend beyond their infrastructure: capital call wire fraud, impersonation, and social engineering against employees and partners, alongside attacks by organized criminal and nation-state groups. Your work protects sensitive firm and limited partner (LP) information, financial transactions, and the relationships the firm depends on. This role requires an in-office presence 2 days a week in our San Francisco, CA office. To join our team, you should be excited to: Set the detection and response roadmap, prioritizing the threats that matter most to the firm and measuring detection coverage, alert quality, and response effectiveness Lead and develop engineers through coaching, feedback, performance management, and technical reviews, working alongside them on investigations and engineering projects Develop the team's ability to respond from triage through containment, eradication, and recovery, including vendor incidents. Lead major incidents, coordinate a16z's technical response with system owners and affected providers, and escalate decisions requiring leadership or Legal approval Maintain and test response playbooks and escalation criteria through cross-functional tabletop exercises and incident simulations Design and improve SIEM architecture and security logging with Security Engineering and IT, expanding detection coverage across cloud, identity, and endpoint environments, including EDR. Write, review, test, and tune detections as code, using relevant MITRE ATT&CK techniques to assess coverage and working with system owners to close visibility gaps Run hypothesis-driven threat hunts informed by threat intelligence and prior investigations, turning findings into new detections Build and improve brand protection capabilities including monitoring, investigation, and takedowns of lookalike domains, fraudulent websites, and social media accounts Build AI-assisted response automation. Evaluate accuracy and reliability before deployment and define where human judgment and approvals are required Keep technical and non-technical stakeholders aligned during incidents, including IT, Legal, Compliance, Finance, and investing teams. Clearly communicate impact, uncertainty, response options, and next steps Develop the team's postmortem practices, lead reviews of root causes and contributing factors, and drive corrective actions to completion with the teams responsible for remediation Participate in the Security team's on-call rotation Minimum Qualifications 9+ years of incident response or detection and response experience, or equivalent demonstrated impact, with depth in cloud incident response across AWS and GCP Prior experience managing security engineers, including coaching and performance management, while remaining technically hands-on A track record of building and leading detection and response programs, making architecture and prioritization decisions, and delivering measurable improvements Experience leading high-stakes incidents across cloud, SaaS, identity, and endpoint environments, including forensic investigation, containment, recovery, and postmortems Strong detection engineering skills, including SIEM query languages or rule formats such as KQL or Sigma, detection-as-code, testing, and tuning Experience designing SIEM and security log pipelines and using cloud logs, endpoint detection and response (EDR), and security orchestration and automation (SOAR) tools in investigations and response. We value transferable capability over experience with a specific product Experience running hypothesis-driven threat hunts and investigating sophisticated attacks, including identity compromise, social engineering, and data exfiltration Strong Python skills and experience building and reviewing maintainable security automation Working knowledge of AI and agent systems, including their limitations and security risks when used in triage and response workflows Experience leading cross-functional security work and communicating incident impact, uncertainty, and technical trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders and senior leaders Sound judgment under pressure, balancing security risk and business impact and recognizing when to escalate Low ego, high empathy, and a track record of effective collaboration across teams GCIH or an equivalent incident response certification is a bonus but not required. The anticipated salary range for this role is between $295,000 - $347,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope. This role is eligible to participate in the a16z carry program and various discretionary bonus programs as well as benefit and perquisite plans including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401K plan, vacation, and sick leave. a16z culture We do only first class business and only in a first class way We take a long view of relationships, because we are in the relationship business We believe in the future and bet the firm that way We are all different, we recognize that, and we win We celebrate the good times We do it for the team We play to win At a16z we are always looking to hire the absolute best talent and recognize that diversity in our experiences and backgrounds is what makes us stronger. Andreessen Horowitz

Founded in Silicon Valley in 2009 by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, Andreessen Horowitz (aka a16z) is a venture capital firm that backs bold entrepreneurs building the future through technology. We are stage agnostic . We invest in seed to venture to growth-stage technology companies, across AI , bio + healthcare , consumer , enterprise , fintech , frontier , games , and companies building toward American dynamism . a16z has $100B+ under management across multiple funds. We’ve invested in companies like Anduril, Airbnb, Coinbase, Cursor, Databricks, Deel, Figma, GitHub, Roblox, SpaceX, and Stripe. Our team is at the forefront of new technology, helping founders and their companies impact and change the world. The Role We're hiring a Staff Engineer, Security Automation to anchor automation across a16z's security org. Your mandate is leverage — connect the tools the security team relies on, centralize the data they generate, and build the dashboards and AI-native automations that let a small team (Security Engineering and Incident Response) operate at the scale of a much larger one. This is an AI-native role. You'll build with and on AI: LLM-augmented workflows, agentic automations, AI-assisted analysis as a first-class building block — and you'll help the rest of the security team get more leverage out of AI in their own work. a16z's security stack spans cloud telemetry, SIEM, identity, endpoint, vulnerability scanning, ticketing, and more. The team needs them stitched into one picture and one workflow rather than ten siloed ones. You'll be the person who makes that real. You'll work day to day with the Security Engineering Lead, Incident Response, SecOps, IT, and ASG (a16z’s Applied Software Group). Venture capital firms face targeted, sophisticated threats — capital call wire fraud, vishing, social engineering, and threat actors who specifically pursue firms in this space. Your work protects the firm, our LPs, and our portfolio companies. This role requires an in-office presence 2 days a week in our San Francisco, CA office. To join our team, you should be excited to: Use AI as a first-class building block - LLM-augmented analysis, agentic automations, models, context, and evals - and design for compounding leverage Build the system that combines SIEM, vulnerability scans, EDR, identity, asset management and foundation models into a single picture the team can act on Build the frameworks and dashboards that unify asset inventory, vulnerability posture, exposure reviews, and compliance evidence across systems Take the bigger automation problems off the team's plate — vulnerability management at scale, asset hygiene, access reviews, and the workflows that span multiple tools Raise the rest of the security team's leverage with AI - share patterns, ship tooling others use, and make it easy for security engineers and IR engineers to add AI to their own work Minimum Qualifications 5+ years of security engineering experience, with automation and tool-building as a core part of your work — not a side project Builder mindset — comfortable shipping production-quality security tooling, with strong Python or similar Broad security fundamentals across cloud security, detection engineering, identity, and vulnerability management. Depth in one is fine; breadth across many is required Hands-on experience building with LLMs or AI APIs — integrating AI into workflows, evaluating model output for accuracy, usability, and performance Understanding of AI security risks: prompt injection, data exfiltration from LLM workflows, agent identity boundaries, and model risk Experience translating technical security concepts, decisions, and trade-offs into terms non-technical audiences across the firm can act on Low ego, high empathy, and the capacity to collaborate across security, engineering, and IT without creating friction The anticipated salary range for this role is between $243,000 - $284,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope. We’ve established a team that is defined by respect for the entrepreneur and the company-building process; we know what it’s like to be in the founder’s shoes. Our team is at the forefront of new technology, helping founders and their companies impact and change the world. a16z Frontier is a venture capital fund from Andreessen Horowitz that invests in emerging technologies across AI, biology, crypto, hardware, and more. We’re drawn to the outer planets, the outliers and edge cases that don’t fit neatly into preset categories. This has been our approach for years: backing founders building a future no one else sees yet, long before it becomes mainstream. Some projects start out looking absurd or unserious — more like toys, experiments, or weekend hobbies — but go on to change lives. The Frontier marketing team supports portfolio companies through R&D; engineering, security, and best practices; legal and regulatory, designed to guide founders and policymakers in traditionally unregulated or tough regulatory environments; go-to-market expertise, including platform support and partnerships for emerging markets; recruiting services to scale businesses; and marketing that helps founders and others navigate the frontier. This is a rare opportunity at an established, prolific “direct media” operation — a model pioneered and proven by this team for over a decade at a16z — that has published influential industry reports, op-eds, builder playbooks, podcasts/ videos, newsletters, and other content distributed on various platforms. The marketing team is composed of experienced brand marketers, top communications/ PR experts, designers, and editors coming from both established media outlets and in-house content marketing operations; the social media will cover all these marketing functions, while reporting into editorial. The Role The Social Media Lead is responsible for growing a16z Frontier’s social channels, including engaging key communities across different audiences in different domains. They will work closely with the Frontier marketing team to (1) adapt and distribute existing content pieces into social media posts; and (2) help create content native to social media: clips, campaigns, and more. This spans everything from social media for external pod appearances/ media interviews to investment announcements; to events and major industry conferences; to editorial content; to special projects, campaigns, and more. This person will also advise the broader a16z Frontier team (from investing to operations) — as well as our portfolio companies — in social media strategy and profile building. This is a remote role (including on West Coast time), though occasional in-office presence will be required for regular team offsites, occasional conferences/events, and based on business needs. To join our team, you are: Always online. You’re on top of internet culture and the latest online conversations, monitor sentiment as well as tracking industry trends and shifts. You’re able to use this context to craft and tailor compelling, informative, and entertaining social media Curious and constantly learning about new domains, including the latest advancements in science and technology Able to both strategize and build hands-on. You’re a doer who likes taking ideas to execution and is able to operationalize them into process, pipelines, and content calendars. But you’re not just good at the tactics: You’re also someone who is able to come up with fresh ideas — whether through collaboratively brainstorming with team members, proposing your own creative formats, or staying on top of the latest social media trends so you know which experiments to run and prioritize Always analyzing social media platforms. You’re data-driven and always optimizing, but also know how to trust your intuition beyond just data and think big-picture. You and we will have hypotheses around content packages — and you will (working closely with our audience development lead) know how to test them, evaluate what’s working or not, and report back so we build those learnings into our content programs A creator and a producer. You’re able to directly create social content when needed — but also able to help produce it with others, including overseeing our short-form clips operation (leveraging our technical A/V and production vendors). This includes identifying, adapting, editing, and timing the right clips — as well as other creative for social — so they’re compelling, engaging, and well-received on socials Able to be our voice. You would be the online brand voice for a16z Frontier. You’re able to regularly engage with relevant social media communities and different audiences — as well as identifying and engaging key influencers across various verticals/ domains Minimum Qualifications Direct, hands-on experience owning social media for a high-visibility or high-growth brand — past experience embedded in a content operation is especially welcome Excellent communicator — through text, multimedia, design, or memes Proven ability to adapt style and voice across different formats, platforms, and audiences — able to be thoughtful, smart, accessible, direct… all while striking the right tone (not corporate, not cringe, not overly whimsical, not staid) Experience with X, LinkedIn, etc. required — and optionally, with crypto-native or alt social media tools and video Strong command of data — from implementing and using various analytics tools, to regularly interpreting and reporting insights Ability to collaborate well cross-functionally, meet multi-threaded deadlines, more Passionate about technology, open source, and more Low ego, high empathy, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse teams The anticipated salary range for this role is between $199,000 - $232,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.
