Leipzig University says the Smart Infrastructure Hub opened at Baumwollspinnerei Hall 7 in Leipzig on October 1, 2026, as a joint project of SMILE, the City of Leipzig, SpinLab and HHL. SMILE’s incubation space is aimed primarily at Leipzig University teams that have not yet formed a company and offers workspace, coaching, training and infrastructure. The university attributes more than 650 supported ventures and about €41 million in early-stage funding to SMILE since 2006, and reports that 32 companies were founded or began operations in 2025 with at least one Leipzig University community member among the owners. Leipzig University describes ESTER Biotech as founded by university biochemists Christian Sonnendecker and Ronny Frank around PET-recycling research; the university reports that enzyme PHL7 degraded more than 90% of PET in 16 hours in the described experiment. StartupLab Sachsen listed September 27, 2026 as the deadline for location competitions including Leipzig BioInnovate, and that deadline had passed by the October 2 check. In a January 2025 interview, SpinLab chief Eric Weber described less established startup culture and scarce private capital as Saxony-wide challenges, while saying Leipzig and Dresden retained potential.
