Amii traces its origins to a 2002 research initiative involving the Government of Alberta and the University of Alberta, and says it became an independent nonprofit in downtown Edmonton in 2017. [44028] The University of Alberta reported that Wyvern was founded in Edmonton in 2018 by four graduates connected through AlbertaSat; its satellites use hyperspectral imaging for agriculture, forestry, environmental monitoring, and national security. Edmonton Unlimited says Launch Party began in 2010 and reports more than 100 alumni companies, over US$278 million in investment, C$22 million in grants, and more than 70% of alumni still expanding. [44026] These are operator-reported cumulative figures. Start Alberta’s 2025 report counted 2,995 active companies and US$870 million across 148 transactions province-wide, not as Edmonton totals. The University of Alberta reported that its Innovation Fund launched in October 2023 and invested C$866,000 in five research-driven companies within nine months, including Wyvern and PulseMedica. [44036] Amii’s published Level Up criteria describe a program for eligible Canadian-incorporated companies with an in-market scalable software product using AI/ML as core technology and revenue below C$10 million; founders and technical leads may participate.
