Rex Woodbury built an audience while employed at Index, then left to run his own firm

The counter-example in this set. He started on the traditional path, and the newsletter bought independence rather than entry.

Before

TPG Growth, then partner at Index Ventures. This is the one case here that begins on the conventional path, and it is included deliberately as a contrast.

The move

He started the Digital Native newsletter in 2020 while still employed at Index and grew it to roughly seventy thousand weekly readers. That inverted the usual career order. Instead of building reputation internally and waiting for the firm to promote him, he built it publicly and then left. He has said two 2025 investments came directly from readers replying to specific essays, which is the audience functioning as proprietary deal flow.

The turn

He left a partner seat at a top-tier institutional firm to found his own on the strength of the audience and the limited partner relationships it produced.

Timeline

  • TPG Growth, then partner at Index Ventures
  • 2020 starts Digital Native while employed
  • Grows to roughly 70,000 weekly readers
  • March 2025 Daybreak Fund I announced at 33 million dollars
  • 2026 Fund II and an opportunistic vehicle, 100 million dollars total

What this route asks

An existing seat worth leaving. Read this case for what a public platform does for someone already inside the industry, not as a way in. He was a partner at Index before any of this. The other twenty-four cases here are routes in; this one is a route out.
