Universities

Where each university ranks for startup founders and research, the organizations around it, and the ways in for students, researchers, founders and investors.

From noticing a team to a first referral

  1. Start with what you already see

The projects in your department, the teams in the entrepreneurship club, the spinouts leaving your lab.

  2. Write short, dated notes

Two paragraphs on why a team looked interesting, written before it was obvious.

  3. Make the record public

Programs invite people whose judgment they can already read.

  4. Apply, or get found

Some campus-facing programs take open applications. Most invitations follow a visible track record.

Questions about scouting from campus

Do I need to be a student?
No. Campus-facing programs recruit students, postdocs, faculty, tech transfer staff and alumni. What they are buying is proximity to early work, and several of those seats have more of it than students do.
Does scouting pay?
Sometimes, and rarely soon. The common structure is a share of carry on deals you source, which pays only if the deal works and usually years later. Researcher-facing fellowships more often pay a stipend. Where a program has disclosed its terms, its entry shows them.
Is this a conflict with my university role?
It can be, particularly for faculty and anyone near tech transfer. Universities have conflict-of-interest policies for exactly this situation. Referring a company you also advise is the case to put in writing, to your institution and to the program, before you do it.
My campus is not listed. Can you add it?
Yes, and we would rather add it than guess at it. Tell us the institution and we will research it against the same bar as everything else here.
Can Superscout get me into a program?
No. We document programs and make your track record legible. Programs choose their scouts.
Your campus is not hereName the institution you want to see and its official sources get checked.
